Welcome to VISG

The Virtual Institute of Statistical Genetics (VISG) combines New Zealand’s top bio-statisticians and geneticists to develop advanced methods for gene mapping across many economically important species. The group includes scientists from seven New Zealand institutions.

VISG came in to being in 2008 and is funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FRST) in New Zealand. Collectively, the VISG spans Crown Research Institutes (CRIs), Universities and private companies.

VISG does world-class science to develop advanced methods for experimental design and statistical genomic analysis. VISG research activities complement international advances, with a special emphasis on New Zealand needs.

These advanced statistical techniques allow faster delivery of gene-based results more accurately and precisely targeted to the needs of New Zealand’s biological industries. Human populations in addition to economically-important plants and animal species will be targetted.

The ultimate aim of this research is to improve New Zealand's competitiveness in biological sciences. VISG applications could contribute $10 to $19 billion to the New Zealand economy over the next thirty years.
